Description

Queen’s South Africa, 5 bars, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, SA 1901, SA 1902, 1423 Trooper Henry Drury, South African Constabulary, who died during the war of Enteric (Typhoid) Fever on 26th Feb 1902. 

 

Officially impressed: “1423 Tpr: H. Drury. S.A.C.”

 

Confirmed on the medal roll.

Henry Drury was born in Dumbarney, Perthshire circa 1878.

 

Henry lived with his father John in Craigie Place in Perth, where he worked as a Machineman.

 

He already had some experience stating that he had seen service with the 13th (Perth) Battery 1st Forfar Volunteer Artillery.

 

At the time, the South African Constabulary were travelling all over the United Kingdom recruiting men for service in South Africa.

 

Henry signed on for service by a local JP at Perth on 11th February 1901.

 

Signing on for a 5 year contract, once this was completed he was to be given free passage back home to Scotland.

 

However during his service he died at the SAC Hospital in Potchefstroom on 26th February 1902, due to Enteric Fever, aka Typhoid.
