Queen’s South Africa, 6 bars, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, SA 1901, 66420 Private John Meyer, Royal Horse Artillery.
Officially impressed: “66420 Dvr: J. Meyer, R.H.A.”
A good combination of 5 “Battle” clasps to the RHA with an extra date bar on top.
The medal and 6 clasps was issued circa July 1905, he unusually features on his own roll page, the medal being issued with all 6 clasps including the date clasp already attached.
John Meyer was born in 1868 in St Georges East, London, Middlesex.
Son of William Meyer, of St Watney Street London.
His brother Frederick also served in the RHA, being in B Battery during 1894.
He first signed on with the Royal Artillery on 5th March 1888.
He did his full time “Colours” service to be discharged to the Army Reserve 1st Class on 9th January 1896.
On 26th December 1899, having likely barely had time to digest his Christmas Dinner, he was “Recalled to Army Service under Special Army Order of 20th December 1899”, rejoining as a RHA Driver.
He would then be posted on 18th April 1900 to serve with the “2nd Corps Troops, A Column (Horse).
He would return home having completed his service to discharge on 30th April 1901.
