Queen’s South Africa Medal, 3 bars, Africa General Service Medal, bar Somaliland 1902-04, Shoeing Smith William Edward Burridge, 7th and 5th Dragoon Guards, only 9 recipients of the Somaliland Clasp to 5th Dragoon Guards.

Confirmed on the medal rolls, the AGS roll showing the 9 men from the regiment as “5th Dragoon Guards, attached to Indian Transport and Remounts”

 

William Edward Burridge was born in Birmingham, circa 1883.
A painter by trade, he attested for service with the Worcestershire Regiment of Militia at Birmingham on 9th October 1900 at the age of 17.
Shown on the 1901 Census as a Soldier receiving training at Shorncliffe Camp, Cheriton.
He saw service in the Boer War with the 7th Princess Royal’s Dragoon Guards during 1902, earning the medal and 3 bars.
The QSA medal roll remarks that he was “Transferred to 5th Dragoon Guards, 23rd October 1902.”

 

With the 5th Dragoon Guards he was present on the Somaliland Campaign between 1902-4 as a Shoeing Smith, being one of only 9 present in the campaign representing the 5th Dragoon Guards.

 

Following his arrival back home he transferred to the King’s Dragoon Guards at Aldershot on 13th July 1904, and was discharged to the Army Reserve on 4th August 1904.
