Description

Queen’s South Africa Medal, bar Belmont, 5962 Pte Jonathan Hirst, Yorkshire Light Infantry, wounded in action at the Battle of Graspan Enslin, 25th November 1899.

 

Jonathan Hirst was born during 1870 in Holmfirth, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. He had been a 23 year old Quarryman when he attested for service on 4th December 1893, having been a previous member of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, West Riding Regiment.

 

He was the son of George and Jane Hirst, his father and 2 older brothers were also Stone Delvers in the local quarries, with the rest of the family working in the local mills, so this was his chance to escape the Quarries and join the Army and finally leave Yorkshire.
