Queen’s South Africa Medal, named “J.C. Burton”, James Chorley Burton was a Civilian in the Boer War and was a 2nd Lieut Natal Telegraph Corps in 1907, served 1906 Rebellion.

 

Officially impressed: “J. C. Burton”

 

James Chorley Burton earned this medal for his service as a “Civilian Government Employee” as a member of the Natal Government Employee in the Telegraph Department.

 

Confirmed on the medal roll.

 

Second Lieutenant James Charley Burton, lived most of his life in Pietermaritzburg, Natal.

 

Born circa 1866, in Manchester, Lancashire, England. His father was William Burton of Cheshire, his mother Liza was born as Chorley, origin of his middle name.

 

He first joined the Imperial Service on 17th February 1884.

 

He was appointed as a Clerk in the Natal Telegraph Department on 13th February 1889.

 

On 18th March 1891 listed as a “Telegraphist” he married Florence Janet Mason at Pietermaritszburg.

 

From 1899-1902, he was a Civilian Employee of the Natal Government.

 

A few years later during the Zulu Natal Rebellion of 1906, he served as a Sergeant in the Natal Telegraph Corps.

 

On 30th May 1907, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Natal Telegraph Corps.

 

On 21st July 1911, he died when he “Drowned on the Amanzimtoti Beach” in Durban.
