Queen’s South Africa, 3 bars, Defence of Kimberley, Orange Free State, Transvaal, 4611 Corporal William Rolf, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, scarce to British unit in the Siege of Kimberley.

 

Officially impressed: “4611 Corpl: W. Rolf. L.N. Lanc: Regt”

 

An unusual old Norman or Scandinavian name.

 

William Rolf was born during 1876 in Hammersmith, London.

 

The son of a Plumber Thomas and Catherine (Cate) Rolf nee Colbron, who both came from Brighton, moving to Hammersmith in the 1870s.

 

He attested for service on 5th September 1894, aged 18 year old, having worked as a Painter’s Labourer.

 

He saw the following service:

 

Home, 5th September 1894 – 21st October 1896
Ceylon, 22nd October 1896 – 10th February 1899
South Africa, 11th February 1899 – 22nd September 1902
Home, 23rd September 1902 – 4th September 1906. With Army Reserve.

 

He returned to London after his discharge to the reserves in 1902, marrying Amy Caroline Neale at Acton Green St Alban on 17th May 1903.

 

He died in Hammersmith on September 1923.
