Queen’s South Africa Medal, bar Defence of Ladysmith, 5223 Pte. W. Phipps, Bedford Regt.

 

William Phipp was born during 1876 in Bishopstrotford, Herefordshire. He enlisted with the Bedfordshire Regiment having been a member of the Militia on 15th January 1895.

 

He served overseas in the East Indies from 15th January 1895 until 10th November 1896, followed by South Africa for the Boer War between 23rd September 1899, until 6th September 1900.
Having been posted to India during the war from 7th September 1900 until 10th February 1902, he returned to South Africa between 11th February 1902, until 14th December 1902.
After 5 more years at home he was discharged having completed his 12 years on 14th January 1907.

 

He is additionally entitled to the bars for Orange Free State, Transvaal and South Africa 1902, but they were issued later having earned the Medal first with only the bar for Defence of Ladysmith, as a part of the detachment of the 1st Befordshire Regiment attached to the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders, being besieged at Ladysmith.
