Description

Queen’s South Africa, 2 bars, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, 6502 Private M. Toolen, 2nd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment.

Officially impressed: “6502 Pte M. Toolen, 2nd E. Yorkshire Regt”

Confirmed on the medal roll.

Also earned the matching KSA with both date bars.

The only “Toolen” to fight in the Boer War and being such an unusual Irish name no other typical campaign Medals look to have been issued to the name until WW1.

Michael C. Toolen, was born circa 1868 (but looks more like 1872) in Drypool, Hull, Yorkshire. Son of an Irish Father, Timothy Toolen.

Served during the Boer War and was then noted on his KSA roll as having been discharged afterwards.

He would however rejoin up with his local Militia under number 4191 on 28th September 1903, the 3rd Militia Bn East Yorkshire Regiment. He noted previous service as “Yes, 3rd E Yorks Regt Time Expired”

Remaining with the Militia until 27th Sept 1907.

He later died in Hull during January 1930.
