Queen’s South Africa, 2 bars, OFS, SA 1902, 3476 Colour Sergeant John Hall, East Yorkshire Regiment. Long serving “exemplary” NCO. 

 

Officially impressed: “3476 Serjt: J. Hall. E. York: Regt”

 

Born Circa 1873 in Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, enlisted 1891 in Beverley Yorkshire, working as a Bookbinder. Also a serving member of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers.

 

After many years of service John was discharged from the regiment, holding the rank of Colour Sergeant part of H Company, Permanent Staff, 3rd Battalion East Yorks Regt on 16th October 1912.

 

His conduct was said to be “Exemplary”

 

His special qualifications read: “Sober and Reliable. A fair Accountant and his Wife, Mary Ann, is a plain cook and a good needlewoman.”

Home, 17th Oct 1891 – 2nd Dec 1895

India, 3rd Dec 1895 – 16th Feb 1902

South Africa, 17th Feb 1902 – 18th Sept 1902

Home, 11th Sept 1902 – 27th Dec 1915

India, 28th Dec 1905 – 5th Nov 1909

Home, 4th Nov 1909 – 16th Octob 1912.

 

After his discharge he became a Commissionaire and re-enisted on 19th April 1915 aged 41, number 17747

It took less than a week for him to be mobilised at the Depot and return to the rank of Colour Sergeant on 20th April 1915.

ON 31st May 1195, he was appointed as a Warrant Officer 2nd Class and Company Sergeant major.

 

He was discharged on demobilisation on 24th March 1919.

 

Earned no medals for his service in WW1, looks to have served at home as an NCO on training duties etc.
