Queen’s South Africa, George Rogers, Dom 1st Class, HMS Gibraltar.

 

A Chichester Baker who served 8 years in the Navy, seeing service at South Africa, Zanzibar, Kenya, Beira and Mozambique service during 1899-1902 with HMS Gibraltar

 

Officially impressed: “G. Rogers. Dom. 1CL. H.M.S. Gibraltar.” Large serif Navy style.

 

George Rogers was born in Chichester Sussex, on 15th March 1866.

 

He was a baker before joining the Navy at HMS Revenge on 14th January 1896 as a Domestic 3rd Class.

 

He saw the following ships service:

 

HMS Revenge, 14th Jan 1896 – 14th December 1899
HMS Europa, 15th Dec 1899 – 23rd Dec 1899, Shore as no longer required.
HMS Europa, 4th Jan 1900 -23rd October 1900, since promoted to Dom 2nd Class.
HMS Duke of Wellington I, 24th October 1900 – 4th March 1901, since promoted to Dom 1st Class on 9th Feb 1901.

 

Boer War service begins

 

HMS Gibraltar, 5th March 1901 – 18th April 1902
HMS Blanche, 19th April 1902- 7th May 1902
HMS Gibraltar 8th May 1902 – 17th June 1904
HMS Firequeen, 18th June 1904 – 31st July 1904. Discharged to Shore at his own request.

 

Returning to HMS Gibraltar on 8th May 1902, the ship then strayed from South Africa and saw some unusual services.
In July 1902 she was made the head of a group of 7 Navy Ships visiting Zanzibar for a show of force following the death of the Sultan and the new Accession of his son, Ali Bin Hamud.
The following month they visited Kenya, Beira, Mozambique before returning back to South Africa in September 1902.
