Issued to him on 24th February 1903, having left the service.
John Thomas Young was born on 12th March 1876 in the village of Churchstanton, Devon, now part of Somerset
Having worked as a Groom, he joined the Royal Navy on 15th June 1896 for a 12 year term.
He saw the following service:
HMS Vivid II, Stoker 2nd Class, 15th June 1896 – 22nd March 1897.
HMS Edgar, 23rd March 1897 – 20th July 1897.
HMS Vivid II, promoted Stoker on 21st July 1897.
HMS Pelorus, 2nd February 1898 – 16th June 1900
HMS Doris, 17th June 1900 – 4th September 1900
HMS Widgeon, 5th Sept 1900 – 24th Aug 1901
HMS Vivid II, 25th August 1901 – 15th April 1902.
He was invalided out of the RN on 4th July 1902.
He earned his medal on the Pelorus, also seeing service on the Doris and Widgeon, who also all took part in the Boer War during this time.
