Description

Queen’s South Africa Medal, 7 bars, Belmont, Modder River, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast, King’s South Africa, 2 bars, SA 1901, SA 1902, 80 Pte J. Pye, Coldstream Guards.

John Pye was born in Stafford during 1873. He was a 22 year old Butcher when he enlisted with the Coldstream Guards on 30th April 1895.

He was mobilised for the Boer War arriving in South Africa on 21st October 1899, serving there for the entire war until 20th July 1902, when he returned home. Following 12 years of service he was discharged on 24th April 1907.

During the war he took part in many battles, earning a rare combination of bars to his medals, the Queen’s South Africa Medal bearing 7 bars, all for different Battles, a total of 9 bars over the 2 medals.

Whilst many men of the Coldstream Guards earned the 6 bars to the medal, only about 42 recipients would make it 7 bars, as only a small selection of Coldstream Guards were present at the battle of Paardeberg.
