Description

Queen’s South Africa, 4 bars, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein Transvaal, King’s South Africa Medal, 2 bars, 1409 William Sneyd, West Riding Regiment. From Oldham, Lancashire, with copy service papers.

 

Both Medals officially impressed, the King’s South Africa Medal has his initial stamped as “A” which should be a W but it was written on the medal roll incorrectly as “A”

 

William Sneyd was born in Oldham, Lancaster on the 18th January 1868 to Robert and Mally Sneyd, Aged 18 having been working as a Grinder and a member of the 3rd Bn Manchester Regiment Militia, enlisted with the West Riding Regiment on 19th May 1885.

 

His overseas service:

 

Bermuda: 5th October 1886 – 21st September 1888.
Halifax Nova Scotia: 22nd September 1888 – 8th March 1891.
Barbados: 9th March 1891 – 7th December 1891.
St Lucia: 8th December 1891 – 21st April 1893.
Home: 22nd April 1893 – 28th December 1899.
South Africa 29th December 1899 – 15th May 1902.

 

He had been serving with the army reserve since returning home after his varied service abroad during 1893, when he was recalled by the Special Army Order of 2nd Dec 1899 bring back all reservists to serve in the Boer War.

 

He lived to the age of 84, when he was living at 132 Waterloo St in his home town of Oldham, being buried at Greenaces Cemetery, Oldham Section H3 Grave 86 on 10th December 1948.
