Queen’s South Africa Medal, 4 bars, Belmont, Modder River, Orange Free State, Transvaal, King’s South Africa Medal, 2 bars, SA 1901, SA 1902, Army LS and GC, EDVII, 336 Sergeant W. Barnes, Military Mounted Police on all 3 medals.

 

All medals officially impressed to the Military Mounted Police, the QSA to the rank of Corporal, KSA and LSGC ranked Sergeant.

 

William Freerick Barnes, was born in Blackhead, Woolwich, Kent, during 1867.

 

He was working as a Footman, before attesting for service with the 4th Hussars on 20th September 1886 at Edinburgh.

 

On 1st October 1892, he had the rare chance to join the new Corps of Military Mounted Police, who were enlisting a small number of trustworthy Cavalry men since they were first formed in 1882 to fight in Egypt.

 

He would served the next 16 years with the M.M.P. until his discharge in 1907.

 

Promoted to Corporal on 24th July 1899, followed by Sergeant on 1st August 1902.

 

Discharged following the end of his long 21 years of service on 15th September 1907 aged 40 and 5 months.
