Queen’s South Africa, 3 bars, Cape Colony, Transvaal, Wittebergen, 2243 Pte Frederick Pook, 2nd Bn Manchester Regiment. 

 

Officially impressed: “2243 Pte. F. Pook. Manch: Regt”

 

Confirmed on the medal roll, which remarks: “Sent Home for discharge”

 

Frederick Pook was born circa 1870 in Devonport, Devon.

 

The son of George and Emily Pook, of Manchester. His parents came to Manchester from Devon, his father later ran his own “Beer House” aka Pub by 1901.

 

At first before he turned 18, he served in the local 3rd Militia Battalion of the Royal Lancaster Regiment.

 

As soon as he became of age, he signed on with the Manchester Regiment as Ashton under Lyne on 20th July 1888.

 

Having done his 6 years of active service, he was first transferred to the Army Reserve on 3rd August 1894.

 

However with the outbreak of war in South Africa he was amongst those “Recalled to Colors under Special Army Order 20.12.99” on the 26th December 1899.

 

He saw the following postings:

 

Home, 17th July 1888 – 18th September 1890

India, 19th Sept 1990 – 1st March 1894

Home, 2nd March 1894 – 2nd August 1894, joined Army Reserve

Home, 3rd August 1894 – 15th March 1900, having been recalled

South Africa, 16th March 1900 – 31st July 1901.

Home, 1st August 1901 – 19th August 1901.
