James White Gordon McKenzie was born during 1866 in Old Machar, Aberdeen, Scotland, son of John McKenzie and Margaret Ann Gordon.

He moved to South Africa and lived in Boksburg, Heidelburg for the rest of his life. He married Williamina Brown, from Peterhead, Scotland at Boksburg on 21st June 1897.

During the war he earned his medal and 3 bars as a Corporal of the 1st Battalion Railway Pioneer Regiment, his medal roll also stating service in the Rand Rifles.

He died in Boksburg, living in the Married Quarters of the E.R.P. Mines aged 47 on 16th July 1913, having worked as a Foreman Carpenter.

An interesting note is that when he arrived in South Africa, he appears to have knocked off about 4-5 years from his age, his death and marriage stating he was born in 1870, when he actually was born in 1866.
