Queen’s South Africa Medal, 3 bars, Relief of Kimberley, Johannesburg, Wittebergen, 3138 Pte T. Grounds, 12th Royal Lancers.
Officially impressed in large early style with trace of ghost dates: “3138 Pte. T. Grounds. 12: R. Lancers.”
Thomas Grounds was born during 1869 in Chesterton, Cambridge. He enlisted for service with the Suffolk Regiment with service number 2655 on 11th December 1887 at the age of 18.
On the 1st April 1889 he transferred to the 12th Royal Lancers. Having finished his period of service he joined the Army Reserve on 1st September 1894.
He was recalled for further service due to the Boer War on 7th October 1899.
He saw his first overseas service in the war, being present in South Africa from 22nd October 1899 until 8th October 1900, earning his unusual combination of “Battle Bars”.
Following some time at home from 9th October 1900 until 13th March 1901, he then returned again to South Africa to finish the war from 14th March 1901 until 1st August 1902.
After returning home he finished 16 years of service to be discharged on 10th October 1903.
He was additionally entitled to the King’s South Africa Medal with both bars.
