Queen’s South Africa, 2 bars, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, 3975 Pte Joseph Davenport, East Kent Regiment, invalided home. From Maidstone, Kent.

 

Officially impressed: “3975 Pte J. Davenport. East Kent Regt.” visible Ghost dates to reverse.
In excellent toned & unworn condition with sewn on original silk ribbon.

 

Entitlement confirmed on the roll, for the 2 bars, noting that he served with the Mounted Infantry section and was later “Home Invalided”

 

Joseph Davenport was born in Maidstone Kent during 1871.

 

He was born, baptised (at St Peters), grew up in Maidstone, the son of Henry and Hannah, an Agricultural Labour, living in Scrubbs Lane, Kent.

 

On 1st October 1892, he attested for service with the Buffs, East Kent Regiment.

 

He saw the following service:

 

Home, 1st October 1892 – 21st December 1899
South Africa, 22nd November 1899 – 3rd July 1900 Recalled from reserves, and invalided home.
Home, 4th July 1900 – 1st May 1902
Home, 2nd May 1902 – 30th September 1904.

 

Following his service he had married Kate who was from Brighton, and moved to Patcham in Steyning, Sussex.

 

Shown on the 1901 Census living at The Stables Furze Court, Dyke Road, Patcham, Steyning, Sussex.
His occupation shown as an “Army Reservist and Coachman”.

 

In 1911 he was living in Portslade by Sea in Hove, Sussex, working as a Carter.

 

He died during 1956 in Hove, Sussex.
