Alfred Thomas Whittlesey aka “W. Whittlesay” was born in Cambridge, England circa 1870, son of Joe.

During the 1890s the great Diamond and Gold Rush was ongoing in South Africa, having been likely swept up like most young men at the time, “Mr A.T. Whittlesey” boarded the Pembroke Castle at Southampton bound for the Cape, South Africa, noting his occupation as “Miner” departing on 26th February 1898.

This coincided with the outbreak of the Boer War shortly after arrival in the country.

He would then enlist into the newly founded Rhodesia Regiment on 16th August 1899.

Serving a 1 year contract he was discharged on 19th October 1900.

He remained in South Africa for the rest of his life, later dying there aged 63 on 10th December 1933 at Zoutpansberg in Transvaal.

He was noted as a Pensioner, Ex-Policeman, working as a Storekeeper.
