Queen’s South Africa, no bar, George Morris, Private, Royal Marines, HMS Forte during the Boer War.
Officially impressed: “G. Morris, Pte. R.M., H.M.S. Forte.”
Confirmed on the medal roll, being awarded on 15th April 1904 along with most of the ship’s medals.
George Morris was born on 26th January 1877 in Welsh Newton, Monmouth, technically now part of Herefordshire the town is less than a mile from the border between Hereford and Wales.
George enlist with the Royal marines at Hereford on 3rd September 1896.
During the Boer War period, he served on HMS Monarch from 13th April 1899 until about 8th June 1901.
He then served on HMS forte from 5th April 1902 – 15th February 1905, during that time he received this medal whilst on the ship.
He was on board the Forte in December 1902, when the ship took the British Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain and his wife from Mombasa to Zanzibar during their tour of the British Colonies.
He would remain in the Marines for many years, by the time of his demobilisation after the end of WW1, he had served about 23 years.

Plymouth Division, 17th March 1914 – 12th July 1914
HMS Jupiter, 13th July 1914 – 9th August 1914
HMS Erin, 10th August 1914 – 30th November 1915
Plymouth Div, 1st December 1915 – 12th March 1917, during this time his papers note received he was at one time on 9th February 1916 appointed as a Garrison Military Policeman.
HMS Revenge, 13th March 1917 – 15th May 1919.
Plymouth Div, 18th May 1919 – 26th June 1919, when demobilised
