Queen’s South Africa Medal, 2 bars, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, 320 Corpl W.G. Carter, South Aus I.B.

 

William George Carter was born in Durham during 1875, he was living in Australia and working as a Blackcurrant Farmer when he enlisted with the South Australian Imperial Bushmen for service in the Boer War on 28th January 1901.
He served with the 5th Contingent South Australian Imperial Bushmen as a Corporal in South Africa.

 

During WW1 he once again enlisted for service, on the 5th September 1916 having been working as a Farrier, he joined the 3rd Light Horse Regiment and embarked with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force for Suez, Egypt on 8th May 1917.
He was transferred to the Divisional Training Depot at Kantara and then to the Anzac Divisional Training Depot, being promoted to Corporal Farrier on 7th November 1917.

 

In December 1917 he was then admitted to hospital in Cairo for Malaria, it developed into Gastro Enteritis and he fell dangerously ill. When he recovered enough he was invalided home to Australia on 12th February 1918 to be discharged as medically unfit, being discharged on 27th April 1918, having served 1 year 234 days service with 329 overseas in Egypt.
