Queen’s South Africa Medal, 2 bars, Orange Free State, Transvaal 2776 Trooper William Savidge House, South African Light Horse, died of fever at Kroonstad on 13th February 1902.

 

Officially impressed: “2776 Tpr: W. S. House. S.A. Lt. Horse.”

 

Death announced in the Daily News, London, 18th Feb 1902:

 

“Deaths (Enteric Fever) SOUTH AFRICAN LIGHT HORSE – 2776 Private William House, at Kroonstad, Feb 13.”

 

William Savidge House, was born circa 1878 in Cwmbran, Wales, his Birth was registered in Newport, Monmoutshire.
He was the son of another William Savidge House and Sarah Ann.

 

He grew up around Newport, noted on the 1891 Census as living at Victoria Terrace in Llanvihangel Llantarnam in Newport.

 

He is next seen on a Ships Passenger Manifest, the “Oruba” which went from Plymouth to arrive during June 1897 in Albany, Victoria, Australia.

 

He likely took a ship from Australia to South Africa during the Boer War.

 

His enlistment papers for the South African Light Horse, note that he first signed up at Pietermaritzburg on 24th November 1901.

 

Next of kin was listed as his mother Sarah House still living in Cwmbran.

 

He is remembered on the South African Boer War Memorial Cathay Park National Memorial in Cardiff.

 

The memorial lists those Welshman who died in the war, noting the 2 Welshmen in the South African Light Horse, Sgt Major H. Mcdonnell and Trooper W.S. House.
