Description
Queen’s South Africa Medal, 2 bars, Talana, Defence of Ladysmith, 1170 Pte R. Dodd, 1st Bn King’s Royal Rifles Corps, invalided home shortly after the Relief of Ladysmith, 21st March 1900.
Richard Dodd was born in St Stephens, Salford, Manchester/Lancashire, during 1879. At the age of 19 he attested for service with the King’s Royal Rifles Corps, having been a member of the 3rd Royal Lancaster Regiment of Militia on 11th October 1898.
He saw the following service, having served all the way from 1898 until WW1:
Home, 11th Oct 1898 – 12th May 1899
South Africa, 13th May 1899 – 25th May 1900
Home, 26th May 1900 – 2nd August 1901 (Invalided home)
South Africa 3rd August 1901 – 11th October 1902
Home, 12th Oct 1902 – 29th November 1914
British Expeditionary Force France, 30th November 1914 – 21st January 1915
Home, 22nd January 1915 – 10th Oct 1915 (Invalided home following wound in action)
Returning to action for the First World War, he landed with the BEF in France on 30th November 1914, only 1 month later he was taken into hospital on 11th January 1915, having received a gunshot wound to the hip in action, 10 days later he was invalided home.
After some recovery time at home he was deemed no longer fit to return to war due to his wound and the addition of the exposure to weather conditions in France, and was granted his discharge on 10th October 1915.
He is additionally entitled to a 1914-15 Star Trio and a Silver War Badge.
