Edwin James Hillary, was born in what was the Colony of Natal, South Africa on 2nd February 1875.
The son of James and Sarah Hillary, he was a first generation South African, his parent having come to South Africa on the “Lady of the Lake” from Hampshire during 1858 to settle and farm in Natal.
