Edwin James Hillary, was born in what was the Colony of Natal, South Africa on 2nd February 1875.
The son of James and Sarah Hillary, he was a first generation South African, his parent having come to South Africa on the “Lady of the Lake” from Hampshire during 1858 to settle and farm in Natal.

At one point during his life he and his brother worked as General Dealers in Hluti, Swaziland.
