Queen’s South Africa, 6 bars, Cape Colony, Talana, Defence of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Laing’s Nek, Belfast, King’s South Africa, 2 bars, SA 1901, SA 1902, 4400 Pte H. Norton, K.R.R.C.

 

A long serving veteran of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps earning 4 medals for his varied service in numerous campaigns and battles.

 

Harry Norton was born during 1867 in Halifax, Yorkshire, he enlisted for service aged 21 on 12th March 1888 having worked as an Overlooker and purchased his discharge from the 7th Dragoon Guards on 7th January 1887.

 

During his time in India he earned both the India General Service Medal 1854, with 2 bars for Hazara & Samana, with the India General Service Medal 1895, with bar for the Relief of Chitral.

 

He served in first the Hazara Expedition of 1891, then Miranzai Expedition of 1891, the Isazai Expedition of 1892, the Relief of Chitral during 1895, then the South African Boer War of 1899-1902.

Discharged at his own request after serving for 18 years & 160 days on 15th August 1906 as Corporal & Lance Sergeant.

 

He died at the age of 79, an Army Pensioner on 23rd June 1944, at 13 the Square, Torrisholme, Morecambe and Heysham.
