An unusual and believed to be unique combination of awards to long serving Royal Air Force Chaplain, Harold Thomas. Who spent WW2 as one of the highest ranking Church of England Chaplains in the RAF, holding the rank of Assistant Chaplain in Chief for RAF Overseas Command, he saw extensive service with the RAF in the Middle East and Egypt and was mentioned in despatches for WW2.

 

A Welshman from St Asaph and Late Exhibitioner at the University of Wales in 1911 (2nd Class in Latin), Gradated B.A. in 1912, transferring to St Michaels College LLandaff where he became a Deacon in 1913 and Priest by 1914, becoming Curate of Llangynwd from 1913-16, before serving at Abingdon from 1916-17.

 

He became one of Abingdon’s volunteers to sign up for war service and was made Temporary Chaplain to the Forces from 1917 until 1923. During his war service he is reported as being wounded in action
