Known as the Rand Rifles Mine Guards, his unit were responsible for helping protect the local gold mines against destruction and sabotage.
The Rand Rifles were raised near the end of 1900, being employed on defences around Johannesburg and the surrounding district.
They were mostly deployed on sentry posts with some action being seen in skirmishes and attacks on their posts.
