Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, VR, Uriah Downer, Leading Stoker, HMS Victory, his son followed him into the Royal Navy and was killed in action at Jutland

 

Uriah Downer was born in Stubbington, Titchfield, Hants on 4th April 1862.

 

He joined the Royal Navy onboard HMS Asia as Stoker 2nd Class on 23rd February 1883.

 

He spent over 20 years with the Navy serving onboard HMS Asia, Duke of Wellington, Temeraire, Crocodile, Victory II, Volage, Hibernia, Vernon, Caesar, Hawke, Rupert, Vivid II and Triumph, being discharged to his shore pension having been Chief Stoker on 21st September 1904.

 

Following his discharge he returned home to Stubbington with his wife Louisa and his family, he worked as a Gardener Jobber, with his son William George Downer
