Description

Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, VR, Joseph Burrows, Petty Officer 1st Class, HMS Hibernia. Officially impressed naming, one of the last Queen Victoria Issues.

 

Joseph Burrows service number 111557, was born on 10th September 1863 in St Germans, Cornwall.

 

He enlisted with the Royal Navy on HMS Implacable as a Boy 2nd Class on 16th December 1879 at the age of 16.

 

He went on to see lengthy sea service for over 25 years, being promoted from A.B. to Leading Seaman on HMS Cambridge, 20th December 1890, then Petty Officer 2nd Class onboard HMS Vivid I, on 3rd February 1892, followed by Petty Officer 1st Class with HMS Cossack on 14th April 1894.

 

His L.S. and G.C. medal was “traced” to him on 11th January 1901, whilst he was Petty Officer 1st Class of HMS Hibernia.
He soon after joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Devonport on 19th October 1901.

 

He appears to have been recalled for service during WW1, now aged over 50, and is additionally entitled to a British War Medal only.
