Description

Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, VR, British War Medal, Frederick Lovelock, Petty Officer 1st Class, HMS Bramble, later returned for WW1 service with his old rank to be a Gunnery Instructor.

 

BWM his only entitlement for 1st War Service, where he remained in England to put his extensive experience to use as a Gunnery Instructor.

 

Frederick Lovelock was born on 21st July 1865 in Camberwell, Surrey.
At the young age of 15, he joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on HMS Impregnable, on 26th November 1880.

 

He earned his first medal, a 3rd China War Medal, 1900, for his service during the Boxer Rebellion as a Petty Officer 1st Class aboard HMS Pique.
He was onboard HMS Pique from 15th Feb 1900 until 4th August 1903.
Shortly afterwards he joined HMS Cambridge before being discharged to the RFR at Devonport on 22nd October 1903.

 

Through his career he had always seen swift advancement.

Some notes from his service record after his discharge, show him as being “relieved as Instructor, R.N.V.R., Southport by John Ellis” during 1907.

 

Following that a certificate of character was requested to be sent to a local Postmaster for a job.

 

His return to service for WW1 reads:

 

HMS Vivid I, Petty Officer 1st Class, Gunnery Instructor, 24h Feb 1915 – 25th July 1915
HMS Halcyon, 26th July 1915 – 20th October 1916
HMS Vivid I, 21st Oct 1916 – 10th Nov 1916.

 

In August 1916 a note reads “Trace Commodore Training Establishment, Shortley, 7/8/16”

 

Another note from his discharge to pension during 1916 “Appendix of demobilisation of this man subject to recall, in order that he may take to his duties as Gunnery Instructor at the Lancashire Navy League School.”
