Of the highest rarity, the rarest of all Naval L.S. & G.C. medals, one of only 98 awarded wide suspender Naval LS&GC medals dated 1848.

Robert Parsons joined the Navy as a Landsman on 9th August 1823 aboard HMS Ramillies until 5th March 1825.

He served aboard HMS Melville from 3rd November 1926 until 4th April 1927.
Followed by HMS Sybille from 5th April 1827 until 7th July 1830.
He then served aboard HMS Asia from 12th May 1831 until 23rd July 1834.
After what appears to be a shore break he then set sail with HMS Seringapatam from 1st May 1837 until 20th November 1841.
He then served aboard HMS Manchester from 4th may 1842 to 30th April 1846.
His last ship was HMS Constance, which he served aboard from 14th July 1846 until 30th November 1849, his Long Service & Good Conduct medal being approved on 1st December 1849.

According to the Mint, 4147 Wide Suspension medals were minted, only 100 of which had the obverse type with ‘1848’ below the bust, minted on 25th April 1849, only about 98 were issued to recipients from 1849-50, Captain Douglas-Morris managed to log only 21 of them as extant, this medal excluded so approximately 22 are known to exist today.
