Description
Royal Visit to India Medal 1911-12, for King George V & Queen Mary’s visit to India, a scarce and unusual silver medal.
The front side features the Cypher of King George V, the reverse that of his wife, Queen Mary.
During 1911, King George V would come to India, becoming the first Sovereign to actually attend their own “Delhi Durbar”, during the visit they would go to many parts of India, a lot of it was filmed and can still be watched online.
Little is known about this medal, but it is believed that it was given as a token of appreciation by the Royal Family to sailors from the Special Service Squadron who took them to India.
A similar medal is more commonly seen for the earlier visit of the King, at the time Prince of Wales during 1905-6.
