Scinde Medal, reverse Hyderabad 1843, Chutursal Sing, 21st Native Infantry
Impressed in usual style to Indian recipient: “Chutursal Sing, 21st Regt N I”
Fitted with “German Silver” suspension in the style of the China 1842 medal as commonly seen.
Good preserved example overall.
Provenance, ex Morton and Eden 2013, then sold by us during 2018.
The 21st Native Infantry began back in 1777, when it was raised into the Bombay Army as the “Marine Battalion”.
Since 1824 it was titled the “21st (Marine) Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry” having recently taken part in the Beni Boo Ali Campaign against the pirates of the Persian Gulf.
They were employed in the Conquest of Scinde (Sindh) during 1843, taking part in the Battle of Hyderabad where they earned this medal.
They saw further service in the 1848 Anglo-Silk “Punjab” War and in the Anglo-Burmese War of 1852.
The regiment later became the 121st Pioneers, before being fully disbanded by 1932 without its lineage being absorbed into the Indian Army.
