Shanghai Municipal Council Emergency Medal 1937, bronze, unnamed as issued.

 

The reverse reads: “For Services Rendered August 12 to November 12 1937”.

 

This medal was awarded by the Shanghai Municipal Council during the Emergency stemming from the Japanese invasion into the City of Shanghai.

 

Most recipients were British and employed as members of the Fire Brigade, Shanghai Volunteer corps, Shanghai Police and volunteer Civilians.

 

The Battle of Shanghai, a long lasting battle of the Second Sino-Japanese War, lasted from 13th August 1937 until 26th November 1937.

 

It ended with a decisive victory for the Japanese and they captured Shanghai.

 

The only part they did not hold was the Shanghai International Settlement and the Shanghai French Concession but the Europeans were completely surrounded by a Japanese occupied Shanghai.
