St John’s Ambulance Brigade Medal for South Africa, 1899-1902, 196 Private Thomas Fazackerley, Leyland Division, Preston Corps.

 

Suspension a bit loose and some polishing only to obverse through wearing the medal.

His departure was noted locally in the Preston Herald on 23rd December 1899:

 

“LEYLAND AMBULANCE MAN GOES TO THE FRONT

 

Mr Thomas Fazackerley, of Grundy Street, Leyland, a member of the St John Ambulance Association, left the district the other day for the theatre of war.
Previous to taking his departure Mr William Huxley, manager at Messrs Bashall’s Mill in Farington, on behalf of the weavers and overlookers, presented him with a beautiful travelling bag and a dressing case to match.”

 

Thomas Fazackerley was born during 1878 in Tarleton, Lancashire, the son of Thomas Fazackerley (Born 1844) and Ann, his siblings mostly grew up working in the local mill as Cotton Weavers.
