Officially impressed: “J. Martin. A.B.” scarce issue to the Royal Navy.

 

John Martin was born in Folkestone, Kent around 1810.

 

He enlisted in the Royal Navy on board HMS Donegal on 28th November 1832 until 7th July 1834
HMS Winchester, 15th July 1834 – 20th June 1838
HMS Algerine, 21st January 1839 – 2nd February 1842. Served in China during the First Opium War and likely earned the China 1842 Medal, where HMS Algerine saw numerous actions.
HMS Wellesley, 3rd February 1842 – 4th August 1842
HMS Caledonia 29th May 1843 – 28th April 1845
HMS Vanguard 9th May 1845 – 28th March 1849
HMS Castor 29th March 1849 – 27th February 1851
Transferred to Naval Hospital at Simon’s Bay 28th February 1851 and discharged as dead.

 

During the campaign, 11 men from HMS Castor were discharged as dead.
