South Africa 1853, Crimea, bar Sebastopol, Turkish Crimea, Sardinian, 1138 Private George W. Ensor, 12th Royal Lancers.

 

South Africa officially impressed: “Geo. W. Ensor. 12th Lancers.”
Crimea contemporarily engraved in the style of Hunt and Roskell: “Pte J.W. Ensor 12th Rl Lanrs” note slight difference in initial.
Turkish Crimea is unnamed, an original Sardinian “La Crimea” type with double ring suspension.

 

Confirmed on the roll.

 

Shown on the 1851 Army Index as present with the regiment stationed in Ireland.

 

The Regiment were soon after posted to South Africa to service in the Eight Xhosa War of 1850-53.

 

Following the war, the regiment went to India before joining the Crimean War to reinforce the Light Cavalry Brigade as they had been almost decimated in the Charge at Balaklava, they would take part in the Siege of Sebastopol.
