South Africa World War 2 Memorial Plaque, on wood frame with stand, Sapper Harold Melbourne Addison, 31st Road Construction Company, 31st Roads Battalion, South African Engineer Corps, who died of burns in North Africa. on 4th June 1942.
“Died in Service” type officially engraved: “172667 Spr H.M. Addison S.A.E.C.”
One nut missing from back and some slight corner damage.
With copy service papers.
Harold Melbourne Addison came from Salt River in the Cape Province.
During the war he was posted to the 31st Road Construction Company on 5th May 1941.
The would then embark for overseas service at Durban on the SS Llandaff Castle on 7th June 1941.
Diesmbarked at Port Tewfik on 23rd June 1941.
In 1955 his family was issued with his named medals consisting of: 1939/45 Star, Africa Star, 1939-45 War medal and Africa Service Medal.
On 25th May 1942 he was admitted to the No 1 Mobile Military Hospital suffering form multiples burns (accidental), he was transferred to Matruh on 29th May 1954, due to his “1st 2nd and 3rd degree burns” he died in hospital on 4th June 1942.
He was buried at Cairo in the Tel El Kebir War Memorial Cemetery.
