Pte Nixey served first in the Zulu War of 1879, where the 3/60th served as part of Lord Chelmsford’s Relief Column, where they fought in the Battle of Gingindlovu on 1st April 1879 and then the relief of the Siege of Eshowe.
After the war, the 3rd 60th were one of the regiments left behind in the country for garrison duty, but during that time the First Boer War of 1880-1 broke out, where they saw action at the Battle of Ingogo River and also the final disastrous battle of Majuba Hill.
After the regiment was sent over to Malta in 1882, they were re deployed over to fight in Egypt.
Nixey was one of those men sent over to Egypt, by this time he had risen quickly up the ranks to the rank of Sergeant, when he earned the Medal with clasp for the battle of Tel-el-Kebir and a matching Khedive’s Bronze Star.
Following the war it was noted on the medal rolls that he transferred over to the Royal Scots Fusiliers.
