Sudan Medal 1898, 3627 Pte W. Davidson, 1st Northumberland Fusiliers. With service papers.

 

William Davidson born during 1872 in St Hilders, South Shields, Durham. Having worked as a Galvanizer he attested for service aged 20 on 2nd November 1892.

 

He was very tall for the time, aged 20 he stood at 6 Feet and 7/8 inches tall, noted as having a large scar across his chest and numerous scars on both buttocks.

India, 8th December 1893 – 4th March 1895.
Singapore, 5th March 1895 – 31st January 1896
Gibraltar, 1st January 1897 – 18th January 1898
Crete, 3rd October 1898 – 22nd May 1899.
Home, 23rd May 1899 – 15th September 1899.
South Africa 16th September 1899 – 29th August 1902.
Home, 30th August 1902, 1st November 1904.

 

His first campaign earning this medal was the Sudan Expedition of 1898, followed by the Occupation of Crete 1898. Following a short stay at home he was posted to South Africa taking part in the early battles of the Boer War, remaining there throughout the war.

 

He is additionally entitled to the Khedive’s Sudan Medal, bar Khartoum, the Queen’s South Africa Medal, 5 bars, Belmont, Modder River, Orange Free State, Transvaal and the King’s South Africa, 2 bars, South Africa 1901 and 1902.
