Description

Territorial Force Efficiency Medal, GV, 53 Sergeant Thomas Edward Athey, Northumberland Hussars Yeomanry. Volunteered to fight in South Africa during Boer War with 41st Company Imperial Yeomanry.

 

Officially impressed: “53 Sjt: T.E. Athey. Nth’ld Hrs: Yeo.”

 

Awarded in Army Orders, 1st April 1913.

 

Thomas Edward Athey, was born in Morpeth, Northumberland circa 1880.

 

During the Boer War, he volunteered for service with the Imperial Yeomanry, serving in South Africa from 16th February 1901 until 11th August 1902 with 4th Battalion 41st (Hampshire) Company Imperial Yeomanry.

 

After the war he returned to the Northumberland Hussars Yeomanry and became for many years a member of the Morpeth Division.

 

In 1908, as a Corporal he was present at the Third Annual Ball of the Morpeth Detachment Northumberland Hussars.
In 1912 he also was present at the Funeral in Morpeth of the late Mayor Howard Castle, who was previously an officer of the Northumberland Fusiliers. Present was Athey with a detachment of the Morpeth Troop of the Northumberland Hussars Yeomanry.

 

Having barely left Morpeth apart from his time in South Africa for the Boer War, Thomas Athey chose to emigrate abroad and moved to Canada, where he would live in Alberta, Canada.

 

He is noted in Medicine Hat News, 20th November 1946 as present at a Memorial Day event.

 

“At a Remembrance Day Smoker held at Duchess, members of the EID Branch Canadian Legion, BESL, paid tribute to Sam Howe, one of the few remaining members of the colourful company opening the last Great West with their cattle ranching activities…
Mr Howe is also a veteran of the South African War and also in attendance were two other veterans of that war, Tom Athey and Dave Porteaus, well known residents of Duchess.”

 

He died in Calgary on 14th November 1966 aged about 86 and is buried in Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

 

His Obituary in the Calgary Herald, 16th November 1966:

 

“ATHEY – November 14, Thomas Edward, beloved husband of Mrs Mary Jane Athey of 819 14 St N.W. and loving father of Mrs Robert Barbara Bysouth, Calgary.

 

He was born in Morpeth, England and came to Brooks 52 years ago.
Mr Athey was employed by the Eastern Irrigation District for a number of years at Brooks, Bansano and Duchess.
He also farmed in the Duchess district for 28 years moving to Calgary in 1948.
He was a life member of Brooks Masonic Lodge and a member of the South African Veteran’s Association and the Royal Canadian Legion…..”
