Territorial Force Efficiency Medal, EDVII, 103 Sergeant William Alfred Avann, 4th West Lanc’s Howitzer Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. An unusual unit.

 

Officially impressed: “103 Sjt: W.A. Avann. 4/W.L. (Howtzr:) B. R.F.A.”

 

An unusual old name and a rarely seen unit.

 

Sergeant William Alfred Avann was born in Liverpool, Lancashire circa 1873.

 

Awarded this medal in 1908 according to the Army Orders.

 

His family lived for many years in Liverpool and by 1911 he was living with his family in Leopold Road in the City Centre.
In 1911 he was working as a Post Office Clerk.

 

Naturally as a volunteer he attested for service in World War 1.

 

He was 1 month off turning 43 years old and a Post Officer Clerk “Civil Servant”, as such he signed up with service with the Royal Engineers Postal Section.

 

He served throughout the war from 1916 as Sapper 137079 of the Royal Engineers, Postal Section.

 

His short service papers note that he embarked for overseas service with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from 21st January 1916 likely serving in Salonika.

 

He later died in Liverpool during 1927.
