Description
Tibet Medal, 1904, Bronze, Cooly Mait Raj Limbu, Supply and Transport Corps, a locally employed man who served during Younghusband’s British Expedition to Tibet, 1903-1904.
Officially engraved in running script: “Cooly Mait Raj Limbu S&T Corps”
During the difficult expedition a large number of “Coolies” and transport drivers were employed to help carry all the supplies needed for the long and treacherous journey to Lhasa.
The non-combatant “Followers” who earned the Bronze Medals were responsible for over 10,000 Mules and Ponies, 400 Donkeys along with another 9,000 Bullocks and Yaks.
They were brought from around India including Sikh, Muslim and Hindus, along with those such as Mait Raj Limbu who looks to have been a local from the region of Tibet/Nepal from his name.
