Tibet Medal, 1904, Silver issue, 4881 Sepoy Gulam Muhammad, 19th Punjabis, the 19th Punjab Infantry Regiment.
Officially engraved in running script: “4881 Sepoy Gulam Muhammad 19th Punjabis”
During the Younghusband Expedition to Tibet of 1903-4, the 19th Punjabis were part of the Infantry.
The British Force that took part in the expedition was mostly consisted of Indian Army Soldiers, numbering about 3,000 fighting men, who were accompanied by some 7000 Sherpas, Porters and Camp Followers.
The force consisted of:
8th Gurkhas
40th Pathans,
23rd Sikh Pioneers
32nd Sikh Pioneers
19th Punjab Infantry
Royal Fusiliers
Alongside the Mountain Artillery, Engineeers, Maxim Machine Gunners and Transport.
Bonhams recently sold a photograph album from the expedition which made over £50,000. It was compiled by Lieut Hubert Cecil Delacour Jarrett, who was an officer of the 19th Punjabis during the expedition. You can see some photos of the men and further details about their experiences.
