Description

Transport Medal, bar S. Africa 1899-1902, C.D. Bennett, in Command, He served as the Master of the Nankin & Clyde of the P&O Line. His medal was presented by the King H.M. Edward VII 4th November 1903, one of 143 Officers of various ranks who received the medal in the first issuing of the newly made Transport Medal.

 

Commander C.D. Bennett, R.D., Royal Naval Reserve, a long serving RNR Officer who Commanded various P&O Line Ships.

 

He is mentioned in Cadet to Commodore by Albert Borlase Armitage 1925 whose last posting before given a command was under Commander Bennett; "Her Captain, C. D. Bennett, was a delightful man to serve under, a gentleman in the best sense of the word, and beloved by all who sailed under him. Passengers, too, were always full of praise for him; and, withal, no lack of discipline"

 

In April 1893 he was Acting-Lieutenant R.N.R. and posted to the Excellent.

 

Homeward Mail from India, China and the East 05 February 1900:

 

"The Transport Nankin, of the P. and O. Steam Navigation Company, Commander C.D. Bennett R.N.R., sailed on Monday, Jan 15 for Duban, with three Officers, one Native Officer, 27 rank and file (Natives), 80 private and public followers, four chargers and five horses of the 15th, 30 of the 32nd, and30 of the 16th Bengal Lancers, and 210 of the Jodhpore Imperial Service Horses,."

 

4th May 1901:

 

"The Transport Clyde (of the P. and O. Steam Navigation Company), Commander C.D. Bennett, was to sail on April 20 from Bombay, for England, with 19 Officers, seven ladies, and 19 children; 21 men, 12 women and 16 children (invalids), 237 men, 61 women, and 151 children (in health)."

 

Daily Telegraph 9th November 1909;

 

"The King has been graciously pleased to confer the Royal Naval Reserve Officers' Decoration upon the following Officers:
Commanders: C. D. Bennett (amongst other names)"

 

Placed on the R.N.R. retired list during May 1911, later in his Retirement during 1924 he was a representative for "Missions to Seamen" known today as The Mission to Seafarers.
