Description

Turkish Crimea Medal, British Issue, “Crimea” reverse, contemporary engraved naming in attractive script to John Phillips, Able Seaman, HMS Queen.

Medal pierced with double ring suspension for breast wear.

Naming reads: “John Phillips H.M.S. Queen 1854”

John Phillips is confirmed on the medal roll for the Crimean War Medal, serving as an A.B. on board HMS Queen during the war, number 816 on the ships books.

During the Crimean War, HMS Queen took part in the bombardment of Sebastopol, being set on fire 3 times and was eventually forced to withdraw from the action.

At the time the Famous “Timothy the Tortoise” who has only recently died at the age of 160 years old during 2004, was the ship’s mascot on board. Timothy, who in 1926 was actually found to be a female, had only just been found during 1854, on board a Portuguese Privateer by the Royal Navy. Timothy was technically the final survivor of the Crimean War.
