WW2 Defence Medal and War Medal, with MiD Oakleaf, Air Efficiency Award, GVI, Acting Flying Officer J.M. Butterell, Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.

 

Joan Mary Butterell was born during 1914 in Gateshead, Durham.

 

She was commissioned as Assistant Section Officer (on probation) in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force on 18th August 1941 with service number “2705”

 

Mentioned in despatches, London Gazette 1st January 1945.
Received the Air Efficiency Award on 8th May 1847, being advanced to full Flight Officer later that year.

 

She appears to have married Cecil H. Baker in Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales during 1953.

 

A note with the medal reads but is unresearched: “Said to have accompanied Haile Selassie’s tour of England in the 1950’s”
