1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medal, Officer’s Steward 1st Class George James Fleming, Royal Navy, Killed in Action on HMS Good Hope, when she was lost with all hands in the Battle of Coronel, Chile 1914.

Mr George James Fleming, was born on 6th September 1892 in Peckham, London.

 

The son of Arthur J Fleming (1859-1905), a Billiard Marker and Club Worker (in 1881 a Billiards Room Proprietor), and Emily M Fleming.

 

In 1901 the family lived in Limehouse, Stepney.

 

Having worked as a Valet, he first joined the Royal Navy on 27th February 1912 at HMS Suffolk as an Officer’s Steward 2nd Class.

 

After a year on the Suffolk, he now joined HMS Good Hope on 17th August 1914, that same day he was advanced to Officers Steward 1st Class.

 

Only a few months later he was discharged as dead on 1st November 1914.

 

His ship, HMS Good Hope had been outgunned and outmatched by the German Cruiser Squadron off the coast of Chile, they were hit up to 35 times by the Scharnhorst, and sank with all hands lost.

 

His papers declare: “Discharged Dead 1 Nov 1914, Lost when HMS Good Hope was sunk in action off Chilean Coast.”
