Description

Africa General Service Medal, GV, bar East Africa 1913-14, 61 Naik Sher Mohamed, 53rd Silladar Camel Corps, Supply and Transport Corps, Indian Army.

Officially impressed: “61 NAIK SHER MOHAMED S.&T.C. I.A.”

A Naik or Naick is the Indian equivalent of a Corporal.

A rare clasp to the A.G.S. and particularly hard to find in good condition, typically seen to the K.A.R. much rarer to the Camel Corps.

Entitlement confirmed on the medal roll, the roll noting that the men had been “Employed in and to the North of SERENLI between 15th December 1913 and 31st May 1914.”

The Medal Roll was written by Major G.E.M. Hogg, Inspector of Camel Corps at the Gullundur Cantonment in Punjab, during August 1918.

A further medal roll for the 40th Pack Battery records entitlement to a General Service Medal bar Iraq, to “61 Havildar Sher Mohammed”.

His service ended there, he died on 10th June 1919 “61 Naik Sher Muhammad” of the Supply and Transport Corps, being commemorated on the Delhi Memorial (India Gate) Face 27-28.

A number of men are listed as having died on this day, cause of death unknown but his body does not appear to have been found in Iraq.

Would have seen service through World War 1 also, likely in Iraq, the “Mesopotamia” theatre throughout.

Further reading, his unit history is covered in “The History of the Indian Mountain Artillery” by Brig Gen Graham, 1957.
