Description

Africa General Service Medal, GV, bar East Africa 1913-14, 19 Naik Din Mohamed, 53rd Silladar Camel Corps, Supply and Transport Corps, Indian Army.

Officially impressed: “19 Naik Din Mohamed. S. & T.C. I.A.”

A Naik or Naick is the Indian equivalent of a Corporal.

A rare clasp to the A.G.S. and particularly hard to find in good condition, typically seen to the K.A.R., being rarer to the Camel Corps.

Entitlement confirmed on the medal roll of the 53rd Silladar Camel Corps, the roll noting that the men had been “Employed in and to the North of SERENLI between 15th December 1913 and 31st May 1914.”

The Medal Roll was written by Major G.E.M. Hogg, Inspector of Camel Corps at the Gullundur Cantonment in Punjab, during August 1918.

An interesting further note is that an identically named Din Mohamed who also held the service number of 19, earned a Bronze Queen’s South Africa Medal for service in the Boer War, with the Supply and Transport Corps, Bombay Command.

If they are the same person it would make an extremely unusual pair.
